Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue State on Thursday 5th of January 2017 presented cars to the six newly created first class chiefs in the Tiv Area Traditional Council.
The governor during the presentation stated that inspite of the economic challenges, it is imperative that government had to meet its responsibility of providing mobility for the traditional chiefs to enable them discharge their duties which included enhanced security.
The vehicle is made up of six Toyota Prado jeeps and six Hilux pick up vans. By this arrangement, each of the six new first class chief is entitle to one Hilux van as pilot car and a Prado jeep as official car.
The six new first class chiefs presented cars by the governor were among the ten new first class chiefs created by the state government. The remaining four created in the Idoma Area Traditional Council is still being awaited for appointment and presentation of staff of office and other paraphernalia of office by the government.
Responding, the Acting Tor Tiv, chief Ivokor Unongo expressed appreciation to the governor describing the presentation as unprecedented in the history of the state.
Meanwhile, a former Military Administrator of old Anambra and Benue state, Brigadier General Atom Kpera rtd has been chosen as chairman, Tor Tiv the 5th coronation committee, while the special Adviser on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Titus Zam, is to serve as secretary.
The decision was taken after a meeting between governor Ortom and royal fathers in Tiv land at the new banquet hall of the Benue Peoples House in Makurdi. Those at the meeting included the Tor Tiv elect, HRM Orchivirigh Prof. James Ayatse, first, second, as well as third class chiefs in the 14 Tiv speaking LGA of Benue state.
The meeting deliberated on the installation of first class chiefs and the new Tor Tiv. Though, no dates has been chosen for the event but it is most likely to be the end of February or early part of march 2017.
Membership of the committee includes traditional rulers, leadership of Mdzough U Tiv, some state lawmakers, representatives of prominent political parties, Tivs in diaspora groups, prominent Tiv sons and Daughters as well as co-opted government officials. A meeting at which details of the central working committee membership would be concluded was scheduled for Tuesday next week.
