Benue state police command has discovered a factory where locally made firearms are being manufactured.
The public relations officer of the state police command, Moses Yamu, confirmed the discovery of the factory.
Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Benue state police command have arrested a specialist and manufacturer of deadly arms, identified as Sunday Odoh.
The state police command at about 6.am, Sunday, August 4, nabbed Odoh upon the discovery a factory where locally made firearms, particularly short guns, are produced.
Intelligence reports stated that the police raid on the factory occurred in a dingy area along Orokam in Ogbadibo local government area of the state.
Confirming the discovery, the public relations officer of the state police command, Moses Yamu, said several items including a machine used for constructing guns, various sizes of pipes, gun accessories, and empty shells of cartridges were recovered from the scene.
Yamu said: ‘‘The suspect is in custody and investigation is in progress. It is a major breakthrough in our efforts at checkmating the proliferation of arms and ammunition within the society and Benue State in particular.”
In a related development, the Lagos state command of the Nigerian police arrested 31 armed robbery suspects in different areas of the state in the last seven days.
Making this known, Mr Fatai Owoseni the commissioner of police in Lagos said the leader of a militant group that terrorised Igando area was arrested on Friday. The police boss said the suspects were arrested at Ojota, Oshodi, Victoria Island, Ikeja, Orile, Ikorodu, Igando and Anthony village.
