Benue State Government today signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MOU with Farmers, middle men market Associations in Benue state and promoters on unified standard weights and measures for grains,oranges and other commodities.
Speaking before the signing of the MOU, Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Tersoo Kpelai who signed on behalf of the state Government said the administration of weights and measures in Nigeria is a creation of law as weights and measures item 65 on the legislative list of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has charged the department of weights and measures of the ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment to certify and check it's compliance.
The Commissioner also conveyed Governor Ortom's goodwill message to the stakeholders saying the state chief executive and entire state EXCO are excited that at last, Benue farmers will not be cheated and expressed the commitment of the present administration in the state to formulate policies that will reflect the change mantra, good governance and have direct bearing on the lives of the people.
Part of the agreement reads : "Benue State Government (employer) hereby engages the promoter and the said promoter accepts the engagement as partner for the fabrication of standard weights and measures in the state. The partners firmly agree to work together for the effective execution of the project as stated in the MOU.
The standard sacks are as follows : 1.28 inches × 47 inches for all grains such as Rice, soya beans, beans,melon, sorghum, millet, yam chips, cassava chips, gbaaye (iron seeds), locus beans and fruits such as oranges without extra covers. II.23 inches × 25 inches for garri. III. The standard mudu shall be 1 kg for measuring grains using one hand and not packing with two hands. IV. The standard Tin shall be 25 kg for polished/milled rice and palm oil".

The MOU was signed at the conference hall of Makurdi Ultra-modern International market.
