The inadequacy of drainage systems in the commercial capital of Nigeria, Lagos has again exposed a part of the city to another environmental hazard.
Residents of the Isheri-north GRA estate have been moaning and groaning as a result of the scathing hazards of floods which has destroyed properties and disrupted commercial activities in the area.
This has forced a resident to cry out to the Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode to come to the rescue to the hapless residents in a disturbing message.
In the words of the complainant:
"As a concerned resident, this is a personal call on Opic and the lagos state government to come to our aid in addressing the flooding issue in the isheri-north GRA estate, lagos. This estate is located on the border town between lagos and ogun states and is closest to the ogun river that runs below kara; just before berger.
"The river has overflown its banks and is now flowing into our drainage that is supposed to serve as an outlet into the river hereby flooding the whole estate and dragging wild snakes into our dwelling place. There is rumour about a velocity breaker damaged at the ikere gorge dam and the dam officials cant control the flow rate anymore.
"Please, we pay all our taxes to the lagos state government and want action to be taken before this river becomes our own macbeth. Some have started evacuating their houses, living as refugees but what about us that have nowhere to go? We have invited our closest media house, channels tv but it might not generate income so they dont care."
