Benue Sate Governor, Samuel Ortom, today donated a 14-seater Toyota bus to the State Command of the Nigerian Prisons Service to ease the movement of inmates to court.
Governor Ortom who donated the vehicle when the new Controller of Prisons, Mr Peter Pevigo paid him a courtesy call at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi, said the number of inmates may increase due to the application of the post-amnesty stick approach.
He said the carrot approach had been applied with the recovery of over 600 assorted arms and ammunition and explained that criminals who refused to surrender illegally acquired arms were already facing the wrath of the law.
He said the State Government would support the Prisons Service to succeed and directed that the borehole he approved for the Medium Security Prison in Makurdi be sunk immediately.
Governor Ortom also directed that water should be connected to Otukpo Prison and promised to look into other requests made by the Prisons Controller, when the state's finances improve.
Earlier, Mr Peter Pevigo, appreciated the Governor for donating 200 mattresses and a good number of plates for use by the inmates.
He commended Governor Ortom for having zero tolerance for crime as shown through the amnesty programme and pledged the cooperation of the Service to the sustenance of peace in the state.
