Taraba State Assembly Approves New Development Area

By, Nick Dugba

The Taraba State House of Assembly has consented to the creation of NGADA Development Area in Taraba State and also intends to work towards the creation of a similar one in the northern senatorial zone of the state to ensure fairness and equity in the spread of development.

This is sequel to a Bill sent to the House by the Executive Governor, Darius Dickson Ishaku, Monday, seeking the creation of Ngaga Development Area from Kurmi LGA, considering the backwardness of the people, whom the letter described as living in the ‘Medieval Age.’

The Bill titled, The Ngaga Development Area Creation Bill 2016, passed through second reading and subjected to a debate.

Leading the debate, the Majority Leader of the House, Joseph Albasu Kunini, described the condition the people of the area are in as primitive and that if something was not done quickly, they could be disconnected to the rest of the world.
He added that the government would not allow the people, who are taxpayers, to wallow in that state of affairs.

Contributing, Mark Useni, PDP, Take 2, stated that the impact of a development area in ensuring peace in the state could not be underestimated, citing the creation of Yangon Development Area as an example.
Two members, Tanko Maikarfi, PDP, Gassol 1 and Charles Maijankai, PDP, Karim 1, supported the Bill and called for government to look at the possibility of doing same in other parts of the state, and especially, Maijankai called for the creation of Ndela Development Area in Karim LGA in order to check the security threat posed by neighbouring communities.
The session which was presided over by Speaker, Abel Peter Diah, promised to take the plea of the members to the Governor for the consideration of the northern senatorial zone in the creation of a development area to ensure fairness as well as declare a state of emergency in areas that are disadvantaged regarding infrastructure.

The House had, therefore, by a unanimous decision consented on the Bill and asked the Clerk to communicate the governor on the new development.
